CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Flour Power

Vega focused most of her time outside classes on preparing the upperclassmen for the spelling bee. She didn’t have a lot of time left to prepare them.

Student athletes weren’t able to attend when they had practice or a game on Saturday, and they had to make up lost time if they wanted to keep up with their peers. A few students dropped in, a few dropped out.

Siobhan continued to attend.

While Vega waited for an opportunity to examine student addresses in Mr. Gordmayer’s office when he was away, she continued practicing divination spells for various Morty-made poisons and toxins. She was able to get Kelly’s grandmother’s and late mother’s addresses in the Morty Realm. Kelly’s grandmother lived in Elsinboro. The mother had lived in Salem. Miri had lived in both Mannington Township and Salem in New Jersey. Vega didn’t know where any of these towns were. They had world maps in the library, but the most detailed maps were those of the Unseen Realm, where Witchkin dwelled.

With Miri’s assistance, Polly drew a crude map of the Delaware River separating New Jersey from Delaware with some of the towns and cities penciled in. Salem, Mannington, Elsinboro, and Alloway Township were all near each other along the river or not far from each other.

At least they looked like they were near each other. Polly argued with Miri about which was more north, Massachusetts or Connecticut, as they tried to place New Jersey in relation to Lady of the Lake. Vega’s knowledge of the Morty Realm was limited, but she did know the area around Lady of the Lake well in the Unseen Realm. When she’d been in high school, she’d explored the locations that nearby portals led to, which was mainly New England. She knew enough to find Polly and Miri’s geography skills questionable and their map full of flaws.

“The nearest portal that leaves the Unseen Realm is here,” Vega said, pointing to the map.

This portal led to West Wormwood, west of Salem, Massachusetts, and east of Weston, where there were cute boutiques for shopping. Vega couldn’t tell how far apart the towns were that Polly drew and what the scale of this map was.

She didn’t particularly want to go on a trip to the Morty Realm with only partial information and a student-drawn map as her only guide.

On Sunday at dinner, Vega was in the cafeteria when she smelled pecans. It was sweet, but not so much so that it reminded her of pecan pie. She scanned the sea of teenagers, wondering if the smell came from one of these girls.

Or Kelly’s ghost. Could a ghost give off an aroma? She hadn’t asked Polly if Kelly had a ghost, but it seemed like she would have mentioned it if she had a new “friend.”

Vega eyed the nuts on the cake served with dinner. “What kind of cake is that?” she asked Mr. Reade.

“I think it’s called granny cake. It has pecans and pineapple—and lots of butter.” He frowned at her, sympathy in his eyes.
